SOL 6 out of 31 An email

1. I'm taking a break from my "message writing" tonight. It has been a long day and I need to let it rest for a few days.

My writing tonight is an email I wrote to the Director of Instruction. I was disappointed in the decision that the leadership team made in my district and just had to let my voice be heard.

I struggled because I wasn't sure it was appropriate. After a few days and not being able to move on I felt driven to stand up for my professional beliefs.

So, here it is!

I’m sure you have sensed my emotional response to the conversation and results of the meeting and the deep impact it has had on me. From my perspective the teachers showed disregard for my professional knowledge. (My self-worth is rooted in validation of my work and knowledge level. My strong passion is my strongest weakness.) I have been climbing an up hill battle with the UOS for four years and just wish I had more teachers riding the wagon instead of being pulled along.

It’s upsetting to realize that the new Units and information provided was not reviewed. I put hours of thought into the original pacing guide and spent district funds for additional materials specific to third grade and it was rejected before it was even given a chance.

I viewed the minutes and still do not see more than four writing pieces. (Poetry does not count.) I see: Launching, Raising the Quality, Essay and the fourth being a choice. I have very strong opinions concerning the number of units. It is sinful and unjust that third graders at IPS only be exposed or taught four UOS. Can we, please, discuss this point further?

Further clarification would be appreciated around the info writing pieces. Students will do at least one informational writing piece during writing time ea trimester. The ‘during writing time’ concerns me because students will be working within a UOS. If the idea were to stop the progression of teaching within a UOS to spend a week on an informational writing piece I would have to strongly disagree.

After reviewing the prompts, students should be writing short-answer responses to all or many of those prompts within science and social studies. For the informational writing pieces to be considered writing instruction the grade level would need to develop teaching points for compare/contrast, cause/effect and description writing. (GLCEs that are not included in the CCSS.)

Regarding professional development, I believe it will need to be someone from outside of the district. Yes, the district should have an on-going professional development plan for writing. I have expressed this need many times. However, to be direct, needing additional professional development has been the excuse since the beginning. I will do my best, but I don’t know what else to do for them. At what point do the teachers need to take an active roll in their own professional learning? I’m beginning to feel that the knowledge level needed to teach writing through a workshop approach may be out of reach for IPS, which is painful for me to say.

One of the reasons I feel outside PD is needed is because my beliefs and philosophy would tell them to stop spending a week on one teaching point. They need to move along. Much of their frustration is coming from the UOS lasting way, way too long.

Conferring takes a considerable amount of time. The bottom line is you need to DO IT to practice it. Here are the questions I would ask: What work have they done around conferring? How many have tried to confer with students? Do they have any examples of any conferring notes? How many of them have used the resource provided three years ago on conferring?

I will remain adamant that opinion writing needs to be included as a writing unit. If anything comes from my email, it’s the need and requirement that opinion writing be added to the pacing guide for this year. This unit has been provided to them. It is critical to 4th and 5th grade and needs to be introduced in third grade and for that matter 2nd and 1st. Opinion writing is the CCSS.

Obviously I have reflecting upon this series of events, maybe too much, but it has been eating me up and I needed to unload before I self-destruct. The UOS is my thing; it’s the one thing that I belong to and so badly need it to be successful.

Message Continued SOL 5 of 31

My revisions are in red tonight... Still working on the song lyrics part ... not sure I like it.

The woman of Samaria, my church family and music have taught me that each person matters to Jesus. Jesus wanted to bring new life to the woman at well; as a matter of fact he wants to bring new life to all of us.

In a way, Jesus was telling the Samaria woman and me, ‘you are more than the choices that you’ve made. You are more than the sum of your past mistakes. You’ve been remade. Thank you Tenth Avenue North for those words.

This story also teaches us that Jesus offers to forgive everyone. He offers new life to all, even if they have been very wicked. I still struggle with accepting God’s forgiveness. Sometimes it’s hard to believe He loves someone like me. Sometimes it’s hard to believe God has forgiven me when I have yet to be able to forgive myself. Sometimes it’s hard to fight off the evil.

But the hold of my sins is weakening … He is saving me from my sins. He has given me great hope and I find my hope in Him because of my community of faith here at PUMC. The woman at the well had her sins “washed away” by Jesus. This church (as a body of Christ) has helped me realize that God through Jesus “washed away” my sins. I have discovered His divine mercy in the living water of grace. The woman went to the well to get a jug of water. I went to the theater to find acceptance. Instead, I got so much more, a cleansed and refreshed spiritual life.

The journey that Mary Magdalene took that morning is for me, and you and you. It is for those who have doubts and questions or those who accept it all without any doubts. It is for all of us who are willing to leave the comfort of where we are to discover where we might be. It was a journey that started in darkness and ended in the light.

So, here is my journey, it goes something like this:

Come just as you are, taste the living water…

I’m desperate for you, I’m lost without you…

Oh how I need you

I once was lost and oh so bound by your grace I have been found…

Open the eyes of my part Lord…

Lord I come to You, Let my heart be changed, renewed …

I surrender it all to you

Let you love surround me…

To you I lift up my soul

(more to fill in here)

When times were tough and I faced one of my darkest valleys

Trust if Jesus; everything is go’ in be alright…

Just hold on a little while longer…

Somebody is praying me through…

You hold my life, you know my heart and you call me by name

Here I stand forever in your mighty hand…

Your love is a mountain firm beneath my feet…

He calls me friend…

SOL #3 Message continued... 3/3/2012

It has been a tough writing night. I' sure I used my delete button far more than the letter keys. In my mind I know exactly what I want to say, but I just cant' seem to get the words the flow out onto paper.

“Kelly, you should come to church this Sunday.”

Well, I did! I came to the “well” and it seemed as if you all knew what I needed. You knew what I was craving: grace. Although I didn’t ask, you all set about showing me the ‘gift of God’.

The ‘gift of God’ was shown to be in so many, many ways for which I will be forever grateful. However, there is one thing in particular that seems to speak directly to my heart: the music. (Not only did my new friends from the theater sing on stage; they sang with a band. How cool is that?) I doubt that this comes as a surprise to many of you, but it was through music that I came to know God’s amazing love.

So, here is my journey, it goes something like this:

Come just as you are, taste the living water…

I’m desperate for you, I’m lost without you…

(more to fill in here)

What if I stumble, what if I fall…

Trust if Jesus; everything is go’ in be alright…

Where is it that I have come from? I come from an un-churched childhood. I come from darkness, fear and despair. My father was raised in the Catholic Church, however as an adult he chose to distance himself from the church. Although dad never speaks poorly of the Church, it is easy to sense the resentment he feels towards his Catholic roots. Right or wrong that attitude shaped my understanding of religion as a child and young adult.

I also had a close high school friend who was Catholic. I remember wanting to be part of her church life. As any teenager I wanted to belong. However, when I attended church with Cindy I was just reminded of the things I could not do; communion, stand or kneel at the right time or recite the correct response. These experiences convinced me that “church” was unavailable to me. I didn’t meet the requirements.

I spent much of my early adult years, searching; searching to belong, searching for acceptance, searching for love. One could say I was the non-observant Samaritan woman at the well. Desperate.

The need to be part of something took me to the Portland Playhouse one evening in the fall of 2005. (This is where you all will need to use your imagination and hang with my metaphor.) When I got to the Playhouse there was more than just a man, there was a group of man and women who create a “well” for me. An introduction and many of hours of rehearsal grew into a friendship resulting in a simple invitation.

“Kelly, you should come to church this Sunday.”

“Kelly, would you like to join a group through the church. We will be studying the 40 Days of Purpose.”

SOL March 1st, 2012

Several weeks ago my Pastor asked me to share my Christian journey at a Wednesday evening service during the Lent season. I'm scheduled for March 21st. So, I'm going to use the daily SOL Challenge to craft my message.

First, over the last couple of weeks I have found myself planning my message in my head all the time. While I'm driving I envision myself sharing my story. I can see myself standing in front of the congregation at the front of the church. I can see the faces of church members who might attend. I can see the glow of the lights reflecting off the stain-glass windows. These planning sessions have served as my rehearsal step which just solidifies how important it is for all writers, young or old, student or teacher, to practice the words they might use. Try it out! How do the words feel?

Second, I have been tossing around many different organizational patterns. I need to blend my personal journey with a Biblical reference and Praise and Worship music which holds a key place in my journey. I attended last night's service and as I listened to the message I had trouble focusing on the words. Why? I was listening to the structure of Bob's message. A writer lives a wide-awake life and looks for mentor authors.

Third, I have been gathering evidence. I have written notes on Post-Its, a dry-cleaning receipt and scrap paper. My form of drafting at the very beginning stages. I have also searched for sample messages on the Internet. Again, the stages of the writing process at work.

So, here is the first draft of my opening paragraph.

A Chinese proverb tells us that "a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step." Sometimes that first step is difficult to take and we're faced with uncertainties. Where is it that I have come from, and where am I going on my journey?

Mary Magdalene's Sunday morning walk to the garden tomb could be consider too short to be called a journey. Yet, that is exactly what it was, a soul-transforming journey. Much like my journey, Mary traveled from darkness to light, from fear to hope, from despair to joy.

One Little Word for 2012

It took several days, but I found myself returning to the same word: diligence. I enrolled in Ali Edward's One Little Word Class for 2012. I intend to be diligent in 2012. As the definition reads, I will give the "attention and care expected or required" to all aspects of my life in 2012. I will be attentive and give persistent effort to all tasks. Whew!

I hope to be diligent about...
  • writing more
  • being a wife, daughter, friend, Christian
  • my skin care regiment
  • my housekeeping
  • staying focused
  • being a better listener
  • studying my craft (teaching)
  • RUNNING and training for the 2012 season
  • reducing my shopping habit
  • saving more for retirement
  • communicating
  • using my resources (time, money, energy, talents)
  • cooking dinner
  • using my time wisely
  • reading verse screen time (computer /TV)
With a focus on diligence I hope to rid my life of carelessness, slackness, idleness and laziness. Looking forward to a focused year.
